Why was Liverpool the backdrop to the explosion of musical innovation that created the Beatles? Port city, gateway to America, home to the Cunard line and three universities, and with more national museums and galleries after London than any other city in the UK, Liverpool has always thrived on students, industry, culture – and music.
Music poured off the ships in the docks, music was the ticket out of poverty and to stardom. In the 1950s Liverpool gave life to 700 skiffle groups alone. But just one of them, the Quarrymen, via Johnny and the Moondogs, and the Silver Beetles, changed its name to The Beatles, and became the most influential rock band in history. Why this band, these four from Liverpool? How did they live and who brought them up, what did they learn at school?
